Aaron Carter, the 26-year-old pop/hip-hop singer who became a star among pre-teen and teen-aged audiences during the last decade, has declared Chapter 7 bankruptcy. According to an article published in
KDrama Stars, the vocalist’s bankruptcy listing revealed $2,204,854 in debt and only $8,232.16 in assets. His debts include $31,166 owed on his
American Express card and over $1 million owed to the
IRS.
The bankruptcy filing also showed that Carter spent $2,005/month to live: including $600 for food, $150 for clothes and $65 for hygiene.
Carter’s representative told
USA Today that “’Aaron filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy protection to alleviate past issues in an effort to move forward with his life and career. The overwhelming majority of the debt he is asking to be discharged is from more than 10 years ago when he was a minor and not in control of his finances.’”
According to the
Huffington Post and the
Wichita Eagle, Carter said, “’I’ve been living a different lifestyle. I don’t party. I’ve partied enough. I don’t go out. I focus on other things that are much more important. I focus on being an entertainer. I love performing. That’s what I’m about. I want to take that next step.’”
TMZ reports that Carter is now living with a family member.
