N.Y. Assemblywoman Guilty of Immigration & Bankruptcy Fraud
Written by CFB Blogger. Posted in Blog
Gabriela Rosa, who joined the New York Assembly in 2013, has pleaded guilty to two federal felony charges because she entered into a sham marriage in the 1990s to illegally obtain U.S. citizenship and fraudulently concealed assets and income from a federal bankruptcy court, reports James M. Odato on
www.timesunion.com.
In September 2009, Rosa filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in an attempt to get relief from $30,000 in credit card debt, personal loans and other obligations. She did not reveal her ownership in a Manhattan apartment in the filing.
As part of the plea agreement, the Dominican-born politico will resign from office; she could also face a prison term of 12 to 18 months.
Quoted in the same article, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York said, “’Rosa’s crimes cut to the heart of her legal qualification to serve the people of the State of New York as a New York State Assemblywoman. She gained the ability to run for that office only as a result of a years-long immigration fraud, and then she compounded her lack of fitness to serve by defrauding a federal bankruptcy court.’”
