Lowest Level of Jobless Claims Since 2007

The number of new unemployment filings has recently fallen to almost its lowest level since the 2007-2009 recession, a hopeful glimmer of growth for the American labor market.
According to a recent report from the
Labor Department, first-time claims for state unemployment benefits plummeted by 1,000 to a seasonally-adjusted 287,000, for the week ending October 4. These were exceptionally good numbers, especially since many economists had expected unemployment claims to go up.
According to a
Reuters article appearing in the
Chicago Tribune, these numbers are a further indication of an improving economy. Joseph LaVorgna, chief U.S. economist at
Deutsche Bank in New York, stated, “’The labor market is entering into a potential boom.’”
The article avers, however, that
Federal Reserve officials “remain concerned about persistently low rates of inflation and are not seen in a rush to hike interest rates with the economies of key trading partners flagging”.
