Clean-Up in Aisle Bankruptcy
Written by CFB Blogger. Posted in Blog
Hempfield Foods Inc., the company that had run a
Shop ‘n Save store in Hempfield, Pennsylvania, has recently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in
U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Pittsburgh. They list over $1.5 million in liabilities, including a $765,000 claim by the benefits fund for former employees, and just $35,320 in assets in a checking account.
Shop ‘n Save closed earlier this spring when Hempfield Foods’ lease with
SuperValu Holdings Inc. expired in April. SuperValu, a Minneapolis-area food distributor, owns the store and surrounding property, reports Joe Napsha for

Hempfield Foods has fewer than 50 creditors, but $1.34 million is owed to two creditors: the
United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 23, which represented the workers, and James A. Skatell, who is listed as the vice president and treasurer of Hempfield Foods and who signed the bankruptcy documents. Skatell’s claim is listed as an unsecured, non-priority claim.
Hempfield Foods avers in their Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing that the Food and Commercial Workers Union’ benefits fund claim is not a priority for repayment. The bankruptcy trustee in the case will ultimately determine if the benefits are funded.
