W.E.B. Dubois Community Development Corp., a Wake Forest, North Carolina, mental health group, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy last month. The nonprofit agency, which operated between 2006 and 2011, owes the
N.C. Department of Health and Human Services more than $2 million, according to court records. The agency reportedly also owes over $186,000 in unpaid wages and other business expenses and debts to both
Suntrust Bank and
Dell Computer.
The bankruptcy petition, which was signed by Mary Johnson, who is listed as a former board member of the agency, lists $23,520 in assets after the organization sold its property last year to
Habitat for Humanity of Raleigh for $43,000.
According to an article by Dawn Kurry in the
Triangle Business Journal, Dubois Community Development Corp. provided “mental health and substance abuse family counseling services” but stopped providing these services in March 2010.
Bankruptcy court documents show that active patients and their records were transferred to other medical providers or have been stored at
OneCare Behavioral Health Systems.
