The
San Jose Repertory Theatre has closed due to lack of local financial support and is filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy. As reported on
www.ktvu.com, Paul Resch, vice president of the non-profit theater company’s Board of Trustees, stated that the decision to file bankruptcy came “after failing to convince the community to contribute funds to keep it going.”
Resch continued, averring that the local thespian organization could not survive on cash flow from the box office, requiring donations from backers in order to stay alive. “’Professional regional theaters are not supported by tickets sales’” he maintained.
The news report states that “Individual patrons who had supported the theater financially in the past told the company that they had turned to other causes, such as assisting the homeless.”
KTVU also reports that “Silicon Valley technology companies the company approached for donations said that their focus was on projects involving science, technology and mathematics, the so-called STEM areas, and not the theatrical arts.”
The 34-year-old theater group, which had employed some 51 actors, stage hands and staff, performed at the city-owned
Susan and Phil Hammer Theatre Center near the campus of
San Jose State University.
The repertory theater put on about seven live performances on its main stage each year with approximately 100,000 people attending annually. Its latest production,
“Landscape With Weapon” by Joe Penhall, was to have run from June 19 to July 13. The last play performed was
“The Big Meal” by Dan Le Franc.
KTVU writes that the drama company also ran such community and educational outreach programs as the
Red Ladder Theatre Company, Creative Dramatics Summer Workshops and the
Creative Playshop series for children, as well as performances for San Jose-area middle and high school students.
