Unhappy Halloween

Halloween Costume World, a costume and prop warehouse that has been a fixture in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, for a quarter-century, has filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The company’s entire inventory has been auctioned off per order of the
US Bankruptcy Court with the Chapter 7 bankruptcy trustee overseeing the proceedings.
From a news article in the
Sentinel & Enterprise News by Michael Cromwell, the business, which was owned by Jack Hoover, began as a seasonal enterprise, growing into the year-round, warehouse-style store, which housed some 23,000 costume and prop items for sale and another 30,000 which could be rented. Halloween Costume World also had a ‘Haunted Mansion’, comprised of 20 animated figures and a full-size organ, animatronics and replicas of such famous movie characters as
Frankenstein, Spider-Man, and
Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and
Tin Man from
“The Wizard of Oz”. Hoover’s prized collection also contained such limited-edition memorabilia as
Darth Vader helmets, JFK photos and collectibles, a
1988 Lincoln Town Car Stretch Limo, a bust of
Gollum from
“The Lord of the Rings” and a full-size
E.T. prop replica.
Hoover has been involved in his community, hosting holiday-themed events and fundraisers. “His
Spectacular Costume Bash, held in conjunction with
WXLO-Radio in Worcester, has drawn as many as 600 attendees”, Cromwell reports.
In addition, Hoover conducted tours of his whimsically decorated home in exchange for donations to
Toys for Tots. The historic
F.A. Whitney House sported a full-size
Santa Claus and a 9 1/2-foot Christmas tree for the toy drive.
