Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Files Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

The
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Yakima County has filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy and, after 21 years of service, is dissolving the association. The bankruptcy listing showed that the chamber, which once had 180 members, showed only $499 in assets and $14,899, the amount awarded in the lawsuit, as liabilities.
The chamber filed bankruptcy in May when it lost a lawsuit filed by Ausencio Araujo, who averred that the organization did not honor his contract in which he was to have provided a professional sound system and covered stage for the annual
Cinco de Mayo event in the Washington city. Araujo was awarded $14,899 by a judge, with most of that amount — $10,139 — going toward attorney fees, reports Phil Ferolito for

The news report stated that the chamber was to pay $3,500 each year for four years to provide the sound system and stage. However, shortly before the event last year, the chamber reneged on the contract, telling Araujo it had found another provider. The president of the chamber, Nestor Hernandez, told the newspaper that the chamber backed out after learning that Araujo did not have a business license.
However, Araujo’s attorney stated that since his client was not employing anyone, he was not required to have a business license. He added that he didn’t know why the chamber didn’t just pay his client the $3,500 in damages.
Chamber board member, Maria Rodriguez, has been appointed the lead organizer of the downtown Cinco de Mayo event under the
Latino Business Association, which also will serve as the lead sponsor of all business events and activities formerly under the chamber, the Yakima Herald reports.
