Art is in the Eye of the Beholder
Written by CFB Blogger. Posted in Blog
Los Angeles art dealer Perry Rubenstein, who began his career as a private art dealer before operating galleries in various venues in California, has recently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in
California Central Bankruptcy Court.
Over the years he held shows for many artists, including Robin Rhode, Jesper Just, Sturtevant and Diana Al-Hadid.
According to a report in
Art in America,
Perry Rubenstein Gallery listed assets of between $500,000 and $1 million, with liabilities listed at between $1 million and $10 million. As reported on the website
Business Bankruptcies, the art gallery’s creditors include, among others, the
IRS, the
Los Angeles County tax collector, New York attorney Aaron Richard Golub, California law firm
Browne George Ross and New York lawyer Claudio E. Iannitelli.
From other news reports, in 2011 Rubenstein stated that he was optimistic about his chances in an L.A. that was steadily filling with New York dealers; “’There are superb galleries that are expanding and experimenting simultaneously, and they will do it well. But they are toes in the water compared to what I’m doing.’”
We wish Mr. Rubenstein well.
